Herding The Herd
One morning when we got up to go exploring, we saw this:

Day 11- The LONG Drive Home
After Mt. Rushmore, we started the drive home.
We finally caught up with the rain when we started south while Amy was driving. Since she doesn't like to drive in the rain at night, I drove the first shift straight through until around 7:30am. That was a long stretch, but it was made easy by all the movies I watched on the laptop,
All told, we logged 4,285 miles. That would be the longest road trip I've ever been on.
Instead of driving all the way to Houston, we stopped in at my mother-in-law's which is about 100 miles north. I'm glad for the break since I am so friggin' tired.
I'll start looking at all of the photos when I get home on a decent computer. Wow... almost 5,000 shots! SURELY some of these are good...
We shall see.

Day 10- To Rushmore!
We made it to Mt. Rushmore without incident. We seemed to be skirting storms the entire way, always just behind, or in between. When we drove through the mountains, there was even a little fresh snow on the road.
We first stopped at the Crazy Horse Monument which has been under construction since 1948 and will not be completed for many years. Because of time constraints and the fact that we wouldn't be able to climb around it until the next weekend, we decided to forego the tours and head on to Mt. Rushmore.
That was pretty incredible and we got some nice photos there as well. The black hills are interesting as well. I wish I would've had more time to look at them. If you look hard enough, or not TOO hard as the case may be, you can see faces in the rock formations.
After that, a loooong night of driving. Amy drove for about an hour when it started to rain pretty hard so I took over. I plugged the laptop in and watched one movie after another while I drove the night away. it's a wonder we made it anywhere alive. haha.

Day 9- Wyoming Is Wyde
This morning, we packed up our gear, and hit the road. We've decided to head out to Keystone, South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument.
We actually left Yellowstone a lot later than we planned.
There are several hotels and lodges spaced around Yellowstone. These lodges offer a cool service to backpackers by letting us pay for a shower without paying for a room there. So for $3.25 each, Amy and I both got a nice, hot bath in these really cool old clawed bath tubs at the Old Faithful Lodge. All I needed was a cigar and a cowboy hat and I would have been in a western movie.
I don't know why it was a $1 cheaper than the other hotel, but it was all good, AND the concierge gave us towels for free. FREE! You really appreciate the little things when you've been out in the woods with animals that want to eat you. haha
Anyway, we took our time with getting cleaned up then had a nice meal at the Old Faithful Grill while we chatted with the servers and cooks.
The workers and service people at Yellowstone are generally from all around the country. Most of them are retired, and do the "RV" thing, always very interesting conversations.
It was actually a little further to South Dakota than what I thought. We didn't want to pass through Mt. Rushmore in the dark so we've stopped in Gillette, Wyoming tonight. Tomorrow morning we'll see the monument and get back on the road.
So far, we've logged about 2,700 miles. We've got another 1,600 before we get home. No problem. ha!
